A Story of a Trafficked Child: Asha’s Story
To pay debts, eight-year-old “Asha” was sold to traffickers for a little less than $100. She ended up in Bombay’s biggest Red Light District, where in order to be “broken in”, she was beaten, drugged, threatened, and repeatedly raped. She was expected to turn at least 30 tricks a day in order to pay off her debt to the brothel owner.
After Indian authorities raided this brothel, “Asha” eventually ended up in a rescue home run by a partner of Mission of Mercy Canada. There she received prayer, counsel, acceptance, and love. In time “Asha” was healed and restored by the love of God flowing through others. Her dream today is to become a social worker so that she can offer to others the hope she herself found.
“Asha’s” story of restoration is sadly an exception. Had there been no intervention for her at a critical moment, she would surely have continued to be one of the millions enslaved by this horrendous evil.
Approximately 1.2 million children in India are ensnared in human trafficking as child prostitutes.

These are children who barely survive in the midst of extremely difficult circumstances – children who can’t be reached by ordinary means, but for whom “going the extra mile” is necessary. Every day forgotten children are exposed to multiple threats to their physical and mental well-being. Forgotten children often grow up without access to proper adult care and attention. Their lives are led outside of the protection normally extended to the young and vulnerable. This is what it means to be a forgotten child.
Deepika Girl’s Home
The Deepika Girl’s Home was established to help children and trafficked women rescued from Sonagachi, the largest red-light area in Calcutta, India. This outreach provides a secure and loving home where girls who are at a high risk for sexual abuse can find a place of refuge.
How does the Deepika Girl’s Home of Hope help these women and children?
Provides safety, security and meets their physical, mental, social, emotional and spiritual needs
HIV positive children and women are given special care and sent for medical care and regular check-ups
Trained and informed live-in staff are always available to give necessary counseling and support. It is the sincere desire of Mission of Mercy Canada that these women and children will receive healing, find hope and discover their immeasurable value.
The Divine Fellowship Blind School
The Divine Fellowship Blind School has operated successfully for over 25 years. Currently, there are over 100 visually impaired children in residence and attending this school. The school recently reinstituted a poultry farm project. The proceeds from this will be used toward their self-sustainability. The school also has a small number of multiple handicapped toddlers who require extensive care.
